The Global Trend of Mobile Video Streaming

Report Methodology

  • Video streaming apps were identified by App Annie from the Entertainment, News, Photo & Video and Sports categories on the iOS App Store, and the Entertainment, Media & Video, News & Magazines and Sports categories on Google Play. Video streaming apps were defined as those that include at least some long-form video in the form of TV series, movies, news programs and full sports events (including eSports) where the content provider retains ownership and control of the content. Apps exclusively showing short-form video, music videos, user-generated content and highlights and clips were excluded.
  • The revenue and download figures in this report are based on estimates available through App Annie Intelligence. Intelligence revenue estimates are based on revenue that the iOS App Store and Google Play earned from paid downloads and in-app purchases. They do not include revenue earned from in-app advertising.
  • The Indexed Downloads metric provides an easy way of comparing different downloads numbers against each other. For example, if the 12-month period ending July 31, 2014 has Indexed Downloads of 100 and the 12-month period ending July 31, 2015 has Indexed Downloads of 200, then the 12-month period ending July 31, 2015 downloads are 200/100 = 2 times as high as the 12-month period ending July 31, 2014 downloads. If the 12-month period ending July 31, 2015 has Indexed Downloads of 80, then the 12-month period ending July 31, 2015 downloads are 80/100 = 80% of the 12-month period ending July 31, 2014 downloads. The same applies to the Indexed Revenue metric.
  • Download figures are based on individually downloaded apps and exclude app downloads when included in bundles. Revenue figures are based on download revenue from individually downloaded paid apps as well as in-app purchase revenue from both individually downloaded apps and app bundles.
  • App Annie Usage Intelligence data for iPhone was derived from mobile usage data collected from a large sample of real-world users, combined with additional proprietary data sets.
  • App Annie tracks usage at the device level using a privacy-protective hashed device ID. Data is only reported to third parties in aggregated format.
  • For the purposes of this report, an active user is defined as a device having one or more sessions with an app in the time period. A single person may be active on multiple devices in any time period, and will therefore be counted as one user per device in the total active users.
  • An iPhone session as defined in this report starts when an app connects to the network, and ends when at least 5 minutes elapse with no network activity.
  • Push notifications are not considered active use and, as a result, do not count towards estimates of users.
  • The apps in this report are ranked based on unified apps made possible by App Annie’s exclusive DNA. In unified apps, similar versions of the same app with different names and on different platforms are unified. For example, Sky Sports for iPad and Sky Sports for iPhone on iOS, and Sky Sports for Android on Google Play are aggregated and ranked as a single Sky Sports unified app.
  • All apps and publishers are reported under their parent company, where available; for example, the HBO Now app is reported under its parent company Time Warner, rather than its direct publisher HBO. If you view the Time Warner parent company page on App Annie Store Stats, you will see the publishers under the parent company, including HBO.
  • App rankings are based on the App Annie DNA relationships at the time of publication. App Annie DNA relationships are subject to change over time.
